It was the spookiest, but loveliest thing I’d done while wandering alone in Raleigh, North Carolina last Winter. I roamed around the beautiful, old district called Historic Oakwood and its Oakwood Cemetery — permanent home to many, some of them famous.

I had started walking in downtown Raleigh and was thankful I made it to Oakwood to capture these, all of them here are with my iPhone. I had read up about the neighborhood and I recommend this Oral History Project, but I also received excellent information from a friendly Southern mailman.

We walked his route for a while, chatting as he delivered the mail. He told me bit more about the houses, their famous owners, and the best way around.

While alone though, on a week day in January, Oakwood was pretty sleepy. Once in a while, a neighbor would look out curiously as I was shooting. My favorite part about the architecture in this neighborhood? They have some of the most magnificent porches I have seen in this country!

My other post from North Carolina Museum of Art.
